A Historical Journey
The Langham’s history began in London in 1865 when it opened its doors as Europe’s first grand hotel.

Famous guests in its early history have included Mark Twain, Napoleon III (apparently spending most of enforced exile here), Oscar Wilde, and Dvorak. From its inauguration, the hotel became famous for revolutionising the experience of staying in a hotel, installing modern innovations like electric lights, modern plumbing, bathrooms, hydraulic lifts and even air conditioning.
The Langham was hard hit by the Great Depression. The owners tried to sell the site to the BBC, but Broadcasting House was built across the road on Portland Place instead. During the Second World War, the hotel was used partly by the British Army until it was damaged by bombs and forced to close.
After the war, it was occupied by the BBC as supplementary accommodation to Broadcasting House, and the corporation purchased it outright in 1965. The famous Palm Court became the reference library, as well as the staff dining area.
In 1980, the BBC unsuccessfully applied for permission to demolish the building and replace it with an office development by Sir Norman Foster.
In 1986, the BBC sold the property to the Ladbroke Group Team for ₤26 million. It was eventually reopened as the Langham Hilton in 1991, after a ₤100 million refurbishment .
The Langham was acquired by Great Eagle Holdings, based in Hong Kong, in 1995. Between 1998 and 2009, a further ₤80 million has been spent restoring the hotel to its original form.
The hotel’s iconic Palm Court, with its dazzling glass dome and signature afternoon tea, was restored and has remained a timeless space that continues to attract generations of visitors.
